Selkirk College is the oldest & one of the most prestigious community college in British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1966, the very first classes were held in temporary buildings, abandoned bunkhouses at Celgar, a local pulp & paper mill. But over the years through the dedicated efforts of the administration it has grown to accomodate over 2000 students from 26 countries, in 5 campuses and 3 learning centres in British Columbia (Castlegar, Nelson, Trail, Nakusp, Grand Forks & Kaslo). Students get the option of studying in a variety of academic, vocational and technical programs. Besides contributing significantly to the educational quotient of the entire country, Selkirk also provides several million dollars worth of economic effect in various fields including but not limited to operations & student spending.
To ensure that prospective students get the best opportunities in education Selkirk operates over 60 part-time, full-time and on-line courses. Students get to study under the guidance of over 300 trained & experienced teachers. Selkirk offers all infrastructure facilities needed to facilitate the high learning standards imposed on students. These include state of the art labs, libraries & Computer centers. There is a whole host of support services that are designed around these programs. Selkirk encourages it’s students to take part & excell in sport along with academics. Unlike the standard gymnasiums that can be found in any college campus, Selkirk provides a variety of equipment on loan (heart rate monitors, frisbees, footballs, basketballs, soccer balls & ping pong supplies) along with locker and towel service. Students can play with all this equipment outside, where there are dedicated soccer/football fields, volleyball & tennis courts as well as a variety of cross country trails for hiking, running or biking.
